The Atlanta Renegades continued their winning ways with a comprehensive 48-3 victory over a very talanted Ft Lauderdale side, in a South DI crossover playoff match.
Played in cold and wet conditions in Atlanta, the Gades burst into the lead right from the start of the game with two quick penalty goals by flyhalf Justin Germany. These were followed up by tries aplenty, eight in total, with eightman Brian Parton scoring three, as the Renegades built up a big scoreline of 48-3.
The player of the day wasn't Parton, however, it was loosehead prop Geoff Clott. Clott a former Clemson Tiger and South All-Star, battled hard up front to give the Gades’ scrum total dominance over the visitors from Florida.
Kirk Gilliam, playing at second row, ruled the air at the lineouts and was never really troubled by the conditions. While his locking partner Jamie Krause was destructive in the tight work.
Flanker Larry Doong played another big part in the game, with bursting runs and solid defense. Out in the backline, center and team captian Scott Hutchison along with inside center Keith Jacupka cut the Ft Lauderdale defense apart almost at will.
"Today was the result of a solid effort, with a positive attitude despite the conditions, and good overall performance by almost everyone on the pitch,” said Atlanta Renegades coach Rod Seddon. “We held our line intact which was one of our goals, and we punished any opposition errors when they occurred. I'm very proud of the way the lads went about their business. Good communication, good decision-making gave us the result we wanted."
The win means that the Renegades will continue to the South championships in Nashville on April 4th and 5th, facing the #1 seed from the South/South pool, Naples RFC that Saturday in the South semi-final match. The winner will go on to the South championship final the following day.
